Dhamal, the dance of ecstasy

Dhamal is that form of dance that is performed by the dancer when he or she is usually in the state of ecstasy. This dance is performed on the occasion of Urs of the Sufi saints at their shrines. The ones who do Dhamal are the ones who happen to be devotees or disciples of the saints.

Dhamal is performed with the chants ‘Dama Dam Mast Qalandar’ along with the Holy names of God, the Prophet and his companions and saints like Shahbaz Qalandar.

To increase the tempo and the energy level of the dancer or performer, the musical note of harmonium or shehnai or even the dhol’s beats add the boisterousness.

Dhamal is quite famous in subcontinent. To do this, there is no dancing knowledge is required at all – just one needs to be passionate.
