Jhoomar, the lyrical dance

Jhoomar is a coveted dance of the country. This word ‘Jhoomar’ has come from the word ‘Jhoom’. Its meaning is swaying. The Jhoomar happens to be a folk dance that is performed when the good harvest comes up. Jhoomar dance is notable because of its spongy, lyrical hand movements.

In this dance, the dancers make the circle around the drummer. They maintain the spongy chorus, do clapping, swirling the whole body on the beats of the drum.

The moment, the dance progresses, the participants begin breaking into varios forms of pattersn and then re-form the circle.

The toes of the performers get placed on the beats of the music in front and then backward.

Jhoomar dance is performed in Sindh, Baluchistan, Multan, Muzaffargarh and Bahawalpur.
