Rubab, a traditional musical instrument

Rubab is the musical instrument that has strapping worth in Pakistani traditional music. It is played widely all over the country. Even in tribal and rural area, Rubab playing exists largely among the people who sit in the evening and play it to entice their souls and the ones who gather to enjoy the sounds.

It is a lute-like musical instrument that has originally come up from Afghanistan. Rubab is made of mulberry wood and has the goatskin covering. It is laced with the three melody strings, three drone strings and 11-12 sympathetic strings.

Pakistan has the biggest names in Rubab playing and the most notables include Ustad Mohammad Omar, Ustad Mohammad Rahim Khoshnawaz, Aziz Herawi, Quraishi and Homayun Sakhi.
